Chair: Her Excellency Ms Päivi Kairamo, Ambassador of Finland

This event brought women’s unpaid care work into focus as a critical human rights issue. The main objectives were to:

  1. Bring unpaid care work into the centre of the debate on gender equality and women’s human rights, including the rights of older women and girls;
  2. Reactivate the debate on how best to recognize the economic and social value of women’s unpaid care work, which is both a cause of the feminization of poverty and increasingly intensified in the context of population ageing, migration, health crises, austerity, rising unemployment and informal work;
  3. Present examples and strategies (including good practices by States) for the better recognition, reduction and redistribution of unpaid care work.
