Conchita’s Statements

In her many years as the UN representative for the International Federation of University Women – IFUW (from 1994 to 2011!), former NGO CSW Geneva President Conchita Poncini has been a determined advocate for the human rights of women. Over the years, she has written dozens of statements, oral and written, submitted to the Commission on Human Rights, the Human Rights Council, the Commission on the Status of Women and many other UN instances. Many of these statements have been co-signed by Committee members and submitted as joint statements.

To commemorate the 2nd anniversary of her death in May 2011, “a few” of these statements have been recovered and are listed below. They all bring the many issues around women’s human rights; and many are still valid today.

HRC21 side-event – Women’s ESC Rights: a CHOICE in the Himalayas (film projection and discussion) on 20 September

20 September – 16:00-18:00
Room XVII – Palais des Nations

This 67-minutes film portrays the lives of women of a remote village of the Indian Himalayas, notably following a young lady called Hema. Avani, a local NGO, has proposed to install solar panels and thus bring modernity to the village. In order to finance this modernization, Avani encourages women to restart weaving, a traditional craft that is thus revived and that changes the life of these women…

The film will be presented by Catherine Addor-Confino, filmmaker. Over the past 13 years, Catherine has spent half of her time in this region, immersing herself in the local culture and slowly building strong relationships with these women.

The film projection will be followed by an interactive discussion on women’s empowerment in a context of poverty, modernization and rural exodus.
